The Atacama Desert is lunar. From the pale, potholed earth to the dry air that robs your lungs and the strange awareness of absolute isolation, I feel like an astronaut taking their first steps into an alien world.  Sandy mountains claw at the sky- a sky where no clouds ever form, a sky which makes this desert the driest in the world. Watching the stars through giant telescopes in an observatory, we see how the otherworldly desert fits into the universe. It’s a cold, clear night, perfect for gazing through the glass roof of the sky to the lights beyond.

I’m abandoning all attempts to remember the genius of my first post- it was beautifully written, perfectly observed satire with a dry-as-a-bone sense of irony that may well have changed the world of blogging forever, but sadly it’s lost now and I just can’t recreate it. Sorry.

Instead I have presented for your viewing pleasure a list of things I like:

Excellent wine, good cars, holidays on private islands, flying 1st class and wiping my feet on the underclass.

A list of things I don’t like:

Lanzarote, hoodlums, cars without inbuilt satnav and hotels that don’t send up a prostitute when you ask for ‘an extra pillow’.

This is what happens when I accidentally delete posts. Next week: my favourite food! (Hint: caviar.)
